How Can My Business Become Carbon Neutral?

Natural Capital Partners’ CarbonNeutral Protocol is the global standard for CarbonNeutral® certification, providing a credible framework for businesses making carbon neutral commitments.

The CarbonNeutral Protocol lays out the steps to achieving CarbonNeutral certification, and by working with Natural Capital Partners, you can ensure that the environmental choices you make are credible and impactful.

It provides businesses with a set of requirements for achieving and demonstrating carbon neutrality that is practical, achievable, internationally accepted and scientifically informed.

Natural Capital Partners will work with you to create a customised programme that enables you to achieve your emission reduction targets quickly and cost-effectively through carbon finance and renewable energy solutions around the world. We can help you with the entire carbon reduction process from emissions assessment, through to establishing your target and communicating your actions to staff, customers and other stakeholders.

Five Step Process

Our five step process allows you to achieve CarbonNeutral certification:

  1. Define the subject: The first step is to clearly define the subject that will be certified CarbonNeutral®. Whether you choose to measure emissions for the whole company or for a specific product line, service, or activity such as business travel, we’ll advise you on which emissions you should measure.
  2. Measure the subject’s emissions: The second step is to measure the subject’s GHG emissions and provide a complete and accurate GHG inventory over a relevant timescale. Conducted by independent third-party carbon assessors, our assessments follow internationally recognised protocols to quantify your emissions. For product assessments we work with a specialist supply chain and product assessment partner. Our lifecycle assessments identify the total environmental impact of your products from cradle to grave or from cradle to customer.

  3. Set target: The third step is to commit to a target of net zero GHG emissions. The aim is to ensure clients get business value from a strong statement of carbon emissions reductions. Effective and efficient emissions reductions are stimulated by the presence of a carbon neutral target.
  4. Reduce emissions: The fourth step is to take actions to reduce GHG emissions to net zero through a cost-effective combination of internal emission reductions and the use of external environmental instruments.
  5. Communicate: The fifth step is to provide accurate and transparent information on how CarbonNeutral® certification is achieved. We provide guidance and can help you to decide the best ways to communicate your CarbonNeutral actions.

GHG Emission Reduction Scopes

Carbon

Clients can purchase carbon credits from verified projects to offset their emissions from Scopes 1, 2 and 3. Offsetting one tonne of carbon with a carbon credit means there will be one less tonne of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than there would otherwise have been. When a business purchases a carbon credit to offset its emissions it is retired and no longer available for sale or trade, enabling the business to count that reduction towards meeting its target.

Carbon credits are purchased from carbon finance projects which reduce emissions and generate wider benefits for communities and the environment. Through our Sustainable Development Goals framework, we conduct a detailed evaluation of the additional benefits to households, communities and biodiversity from carbon finance projects.

Renewable energy

Clients can purchase energy attribute certificates (EACs) to match power consumption around the world, including Green Gas Certificates to address their Scope 1 emissions, and a range of EACs which track renewable electricity to address their Scope 2 emissions.

EACs label electricity from renewable sources to provide information to consumers about the source of their energy. One certificate is issued for each MWh of renewable electricity produced and is retired to enable consumers to claim renewable energy sourcing. In accordance with The GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance, companies of all sizes can source EACs to reduce their reportable Scope 2 emissions and cost-effectively meet their targets in the geographies most important to them.
