Brooks Running

Following years of efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its product, in 2021 Brooks made its highest-volume style – the Ghost 14 – carbon neutral. In 2022, Brooks went one step further and used our established, global framework for carbon neutrality to achieve CarbonNeutral® product certification for the Ghost 15 – adding further credibility and robustness to its climate action.

Measure

Learn more

To understand the carbon emissions that result from a pair of Ghost 15’s, Brooks performed a life cycle impact assessment utilizing the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) methodology, the current standard of the European Commission. This assessment calculated the carbon emissions from each lifecycle stage of the Ghost 15 – including raw material extraction, material manufacturing, product assembly, packaging, distribution, and end-of-life.

Target

Learn more

Brooks believes climate change demands urgent and universal action. It is committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 & 2 greenhouse gas emissions 50% and absolute Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions 15% by 2030 (from a 2018 baseline) and achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 — 10 years ahead of the goal set by the Paris Agreement.

To achieve these ambitious goals, Brooks first prioritizes reducing carbon emissions, including converting materials in its product to recycled alternatives, using low carbon impact textile dyeing processes, partnering with its factories to improve energy efficiency and use renewable energy, and prioritizing ocean freight.

As Brooks moves along this path, it recognizes it will continue to emit carbon emissions and holds itself responsible to address this impact. That’s why Brooks compensates for the carbon emissions it has not yet reduced by purchasing carbon credits to make an immediate impact to help address climate change.

Reduce

Learn more

Carbon emissions per pair reduced 6% between the Ghost 14 and Ghost 15. This reduction was predominantly driven by an increase in recycled materials in the textile upper of the Ghost 15 (from 15% to 24%), and a decrease in air shipments from factory to distribution centre.

Brooks recognizes that current reductions are just one step towards meeting their targets, and therefore the company supports external emission reduction and avoidance projects in the U.S. and globally to offset the carbon emissions of the Ghost 15.

Brooks is committed to a long-term, science-based approach to sustainability. It recognizes the need to think holistically about the planetary impact of its products over their full lifecycle, and communicating this transparently is important to the brand.

Sustainability credentials are communicated on Brooks ecommerce website for the majority of its products, and the Ghost 15 page includes information about its CarbonNeutral product certification.

Brooks’ Running Responsibly web page outlines the brands commitments to protect the planet we run on, and reports on its progress towards achieving these commitments in its annual Running Responsibly Reports.

One of the features on the Brooks homepage highlights the Ghost 15 and its carbon neutrality.
