A wide range of skills and experience from all over the world means the team at The CarbonNeutral Company provide clients with comprehensive expertise and knowledge. Their focus is on helping the clients of The CarbonNeutral Company develop programmes to reduce their environmental impact and deliver business value.

The team is also supported by an Advisory Forum (AF) of international sustainability experts from science, economics, business, international policy and sustainable development backgrounds. They guide the Company on its work in climate change, and on the strategic, scientific and technical aspects of its activities.

There are six teams within the company. Senior Management, Business Development & Client Relationship Management, Marketing, Strategic Development, Sourcing and Finance.

    Stephen joined The CarbonNeutral Company in 2007 as Chief Executive Officer. He has more than 20 years’ experience leading successful businesses in the finance and technology sectors, including WorldWinner, a venture-backed start up in the casual games space which was acquired by Liberty Media, TerraLycos (MADRID & NASDAQ: TRLY), the fourth largest online media property in the world, and Raging Bull which was sold to AltaVista for over $250 million. Stephen has received numerous awards and honours including the unique distinction of leading two companies that received the Deloitte & Touche Fast 50 award. Stephen also serves on the board of directors of Shutterfly (NASDAQ: SFLY).

  • Jonathan Shopley, Managing Director

    As Managing Director, Jonathan Shopley leads The CarbonNeutral Company’s contribution to international policy developments on climate change and standards for carbon trading and carbon offsetting. He is on the board of the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA) and the executive team of the International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance (ICROA). Jonathan, who joined The CarbonNeutral Company in 2001, has 25 years’ experience in identifying and mitigating environmental impacts from industry. He is regularly invited to represent the view of business at UN COP meetings and industry events throughout the world.

    Jon May

    Jon sits on the Board of The CarbonNeutral Company and uses his experience in private equity, finance and operations to advise the business on its strategic development. Jon was Chief Operating Officer of the business from 2008 to 2015. He combines considerable experience in corporate financing with expertise in developing and managing successful consumer-facing brands. His previous roles include Co-founder of Catalytic Capital LLC, a venture capital firm, Senior Vice President of Corporate Development for Triarc Companies, Inc, and CEO and Chairman of Arby’s.

    Jon is also on the Board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City, a youth mentoring organisation.

    Mark has over 25 years' experience as a senior sustainability and business development executive. Prior to joining in 2008, Mark worked with Interface and was fortunate enough to be part of Ray Anderson’s sustainability epiphany and, as a result, refocused his career to serve as VP Sustainability for Interface’s Fabrics Division.

    Mark leads our work in the Americas, partnering with clients such as Microsoft, UPS and Bain & Company, to drive positive business results through the management of their environmental and carbon impacts using market-based solutions. He is also on the advisory board of The Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise.

    Nathan has led the Europe and Asia business development and client relationship teams since 2007, focused on working with leading businesses to understand and reduce their environmental impacts in a way that delivers value for their business. He has played a key role in building our client base including establishing and maintaining relationships with clients such as M&S, Nationwide, PwC and Sky, and is responsible for building and running our channel partnerships in countries such as India and Sri Lanka.

    Nathan has 18 years’ business development experience working at FT Business, Reed Elsevier and Williams Lea.

    Vivian has extensive sustainability experience in the private and non-for-profit sectors and spent five years working at SEDEX supporting clients on the development of ethical supply chain practices. She works with clients such as Sky, M&S and Grundon Waste Management to maximise the potential of their environmental programmes in line with their wider corporate responsibility and business objectives.

    Vivian is a fluent Spanish speaker and holds an MA in Latin American Development from the University of London and BA from The University of Nottingham. During her BA, Vivian worked in the Mexican Senate in Mexico City, as well as volunteering at social services centres for children in Brazil.

    Working with clients such as Microsoft and Bain & Company, Alexa helps develop and implement their GHG reduction and renewable energy programmes.

    Alexa has over 12 years’ industry experience and previously worked at Evolution Markets Ltd in London, facilitating transactions in the regulated and voluntary global carbon markets. She developed her knowledge of the U.S. domestic emissions and renewable energy markets working at Cantor Fitzgerald and ICAP Energy. Alexa holds an MSc in Environmental Policy Planning and Regulation from the London School of Economics and a BS in Environmental Management and Economics Minor from Indiana University.

    Tom holds an MSc in Environmental Management from SOAS and BA in Geography from University of Sheffield, focusing on climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies. As a Business Development Manager, Tom is responsible for creating solutions to clients’ carbon, water, biodiversity and renewable energy challenges using market-based mechanisms such as carbon finance, green power instruments and water benefit certificates.

    Tom is an associate of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) and has 10 years’ experience in business development across multiple sectors including infrastructure, energy, events and media.

    Natalie has 12 years’ business development experience and in her seven years at The CarbonNeutral Company her clients have included M&S, PwC, Sky, TUI and EDF. Her role is to help clients manage their environmental footprint in line with their wider corporate responsibility and business objectives by delivering the appropriate solution to meet their carbon, renewable energy, biodiversity and water stewardship goals.

    Natalie graduated from the University of Bath with a BA in International Management and Modern Languages, specialising in French.

    Having joined The CarbonNeutral Company in 2008, Natascha uses her knowledge of sustainability issues to deliver outstanding service levels to some of our largest and longest standing clients, including Avis, Nationwide, EDF Energy, Commercial Group and ASOS.

    As a Senior Client Relationship Manager, Natascha works with clients to reduce carbon emissions, build renewable energy programmes and manage environmental impact in ways that engage stakeholders and build business value.

    Antonia works closely with a range of clients across the finance, IT, insurance, construction and logistics sectors to ensure they are reaching the full potential of their sustainability programmes, using market-based instruments. Her clients include Sopra Steria Group, Willmott Dixon and Arjo Wiggins and her role is to understand each client’s unique objectives, creating a portfolio of solutions that help strengthen their overall business proposition.

    Antonia has more than seven years’ carbon and energy management experience and holds a BSc in Environmental Science and Environmental Planning from Griffith University, Queensland Australia.

    Cassandra has previously worked as a Senior Consultant at Sustainable Carbon, a project development and GHG management company in Brazil. She holds a BA in International Business and minors in German and Spanish from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

    Rebecca graduated from the University of Nottingham with a BSc Hons and MSc Merit in Environmental Science and Environmental Management and has been a member of the Chartered Institute of Waste Management since 2013. Recently, she was accepted as a member of the Ethical Fashion Source Network.

    Since joining The CarbonNeutral Company in 2013, Rebecca has used her interest and knowledge of environmental science and research and technical skills to support the client relationship, sales, strategic development, sourcing and marketing teams.

She partners with clients such as Microsoft, Bain & Company, Avis and M&S to ensure their programmes with The CarbonNeutral Company deliver value to their business through compelling stakeholder engagement. She is also responsible for the development and launch of new products and services to meet our clients’ changing requirements to manage their environmental impact.

    Rebecca works closely with key external partners such as Forum for the Future, UNICEF, ICROA and members of our Advisory Forum.

    Oliver leads a team in developing the products and systems to meet our clients’ changing requirements and deliver efficient, effective support. He creates the solutions that meet the water, carbon, biodiversity, renewable energy and community impacts which are most important to our global client base.

    Since beginning his career at JP Morgan, Oliver has gained over 10 years’ experience in the energy and environmental management sectors. He spent five years as a strategy consultant in Accenture’s global energy practice, before joining The CarbonNeutral Company in 2007. He holds a BSc from the University of Bath and the Rotterdam School of Management.

    Gary specialises in web and software development, systems and server security and is responsible for all online and cloud business-critical systems including our proprietary Instrument Accounting System, Salesforce, Sharepoint, Exchange, Websites and our Carbon Calculators. Managing the IT support team, Gary ensures all office infrastructure and telecoms are fully operational.

    Gary has a strong financial technical background in back office banking and trading software, previously working with companies such as Goldmans Sachs, JPMorgan, and Cantor Fitzgerald.

  • Zubair Zakir, Director of Sourcing

    Zubair is responsible for identifying and assessing the most appropriate, high quality projects to meet our clients’ requirements to reduce their environmental impacts. He has conducted over 150 transactions in 30 countries, including the first VCS+CCBA forest carbon deal in the world, UNICEF’s first carbon finance project, and the first international trade of carbon credits from a landmark indigenous peoples REDD+ project.

    Previously, Zubair was Vice President at CantorCO2e. He holds a BA from Kings College and a Masters in Management from ESCP-Europe and is Director of the Higher Ground Foundation, helping vulnerable communities adapt to climate change.

    Carl is responsible for screening environmental projects through our due diligence programme to ensure we deliver the highest quality to our clients. His role is essential in helping to build and maintain strong working relationships with all our project partners. He is also responsible for tracking the delivery and retirement of clients’ carbon offset portfolios to ensure their emission reduction goals are met.

    With a keen personal and professional interest in forest conservation and renewable energy, Carl graduated from Oxford University with a BA Hons in Geography and focused his dissertation around solar PV.

    With more than 18 years’ industry experience of energy and climate change issues, Christiaan sources the highest quality environmental projects around the world. He uses his experience to develop new products, provide insight on global policy developments, and build strong relationships with our supply partners.

    Christiaan is also a member of the UNFCCC Methodologies Panel, Project Developers Forum Executive Committee, Technical Advisory Group of the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council, and has a Masters in Science and Policy from Utrecht University.

    Louan is responsible for overseeing the Finance team in London and has more than six years’ experience in finance and audit in Cape Town, Amsterdam and London. He is a chartered accountant and has worked as a senior auditor for Baker Tilly and Deloitte and as a financial analyst for BHP Billiton.

    Louan’s varied role includes providing and interpreting financial information; analysing financial improvement opportunities; formulating strategic and long-term business plans and researching and reporting on factors influencing business performance. He also ensures the company is abreast of changes in financial regulations and legislation.

    Jalal has 14 years’ experience as a finance professional in a variety of business sectors. He is responsible for maintaining the general ledger, preparation and submission of month-end financial statements to senior management, submitting HMRC returns for Corporations tax, VAT and other taxes and liaising with the auditors to ensure an efficient and accurate year-end audit.

    Jalal has a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting & Finance and is currently pursuing his Professional Qualifications in ACCA.
