When it comes to sustainability, Corus want to be part of the solution, not the problem.
The target is ambitious: to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 20% within the next decade through a combination of process improvements and breakthrough technologies. But as Europe’s second-largest steel producer, Corus want to show that steel can help build a sustainable world.
So as part of their effort, in April of 2007, they introduced Confidex Sustain®, the world’s first CarbonNeutral® building envelope. To develop this groundbreaking offer, Corus partnered with us to calculate the emissions produced over the entire life-cycle of a steel building envelope. Now, every time a Confidex Sustain® envelope is used, offsets reduce its carbon footprint to zero.
How The CarbonNeutral Company helped:
- We developed a methodology to accurately calculate the greenhouse gas emissions produced over the life-cycle of the Confidex Sustain® product – including manufacture, installation, use, re-use and end-of-life options.
- We reduce the carbon footprint of Confidex Sustain® to net zero by providing a portfolio of carbon offsets which meet the highest global carbon offset standards.
- We helped Corus develop a training programme for their sales team that helps them to fully understand the concept of a CarbonNeutral® building envelope and ensures that they can explain this successfully to others in the supply chain.
After an extensive review of carbon offset providers, we decided to work with The CarbonNeutral Company because of its positive reputation, the investment it makes in quality assurance (particularly the audit of its carbon management process by PwC) along with the scale, traceability and range of offset projects on offer. Importantly, we also felt that they understood what we were trying to achieve with Confidex Sustain® and have proved to be a good partner for Corus.
