Paul Vallone, Divisional Operations Director, Berkeley
Homes'We're using our CarbonNeutral project to demonstrate our positive approach to Sustainabilty - and it's been incredibly valuable on almost every dimension'
Founded in 1976, Berkeley Homes is the largest division of the Berkeley Group Plc, a FTSE 250 company. Berkeley Homes has a turnover of over £500 million and last year completed over 1,800 units. In recent years the Company has broadened its portfolio from its traditional detached developments to include large urban regeneration schemes. Berkeley Homes now has unrivalled expertise in creating sustainable communities within complex regeneration schemes on brownfield sites. Although the location, size and complexity of sites vary, Berkeley Homes always delivers superbly designed and built homes.

Objectives

  • Address the environmental impact caused by the construction industry
  • Improve environmental position of the company
  • Improve corporate position amongst corporate and public customers and stakeholders

Programme

  • Assessed emissions produced by Berkeley Homes West 3 development
  • Advised a switch to renewable energy

Results

  • Cut emissions by 1,700 tonnes CO2 (18% of the emissions of the project)
  • Offset remaining emissions with climate friendly technology schemes and forestry
  • Increased brand presence and profile in the national press – over 300% ROI in advertising equivalent value
  • Gained support from local and national government
  • 518 new homes at West 3 signed to ‘green’ energy represented around a full 1% of the total UK population on a renewable tariff
