Patervan, Lanarkshire, UK
Located in the heart of the Scottish Borders, this forest site covers 13 hectares of land that has been grazed by cattle and sheep for centuries. The restoration of this area will see it planted with birch and other native broadleaved trees and shrubs. Planting at this site will attract rare species including black grouse, otters, ring ouzel and golden plover.
Rhine-Ruhr Waste Gas Power Project, Germany
This project captures methane from three abandoned coal mines located in the Rhine and Ruhr valleys in Germany, a region with an extensive coal mining history dating back over 100 years. Since the 1960s, demand for coal has declined and many mines have been closed. Even after closure, methane continues to escape through open shafts and cracks for many years. This project will capture the methane that would otherwise escape from the three mines and use it to generate electricity and heat.
