| Becoming CarbonNeutral |

CarbonNeutral® is net zero CO2 emissions achieved to a standard called the CarbonNeutral Protocol and, using that, a full CarbonNeutral programme would cover CO2 measurement, reduction and communication. Central to the Protocol are the principles of quality data, independent verification, reduction targets, high quality guaranteed carbon offsets, and clear labelling of what has been achieved.
Some clients need us for only one element of a programme; for others, we work in partnership every step of the way.

Using carbon offset to meet reduction targets
Though the words are now more familiar, many clients are unclear about the process of 'carbon offset'. The way it works is that for every 1 tonne of CO2 you are unable to reduce, you can pay for 1 tonne to be reduced somewhere else in the world (you buy a 'carbon credit'). Carbon emissions are thus counterbalanced by carbon savings.
There has been some criticism of offset in the past - because there was a sense that it was a way for companies or individuals to ease their consciences without making any real changes. But this situation has changed as the chain of benefits is more apparent.
For example, speed. Businesses could target to reduce emissions by 20% through 'internal reductions' like changing a car fleet or manufacturing process - but it will take time. Scientists meanwhile are calling for an 80% reduction and dramatic action in the short term. The only way to achieve that is through carbon offsetting, and our experience is that some of the most responsible companies are using offset to get to net zero CO2 from day one and then reducing the offset purchase year on year as internal reduction targets are hit.
And, for example, clean development. In developing countries, the cheapest (and therefore most attractive) energy source is fossil fuel like coal. Offsetting brings vital finance to clean technology schemes so that they can compete on price for business, and so markets grow on a low carbon footing. A recent film we made of 3 projects gives further insight.

Making it happen
|

Depending on a client's exact requirement, we co-ordinate resources to help you achieve the CarbonNeutral brand mark and to communicate that.
Assessments: In Europe, we organise carbon emissions assessments (Carbon Assessment) in association with our independent science advisors at end ECCM. You can opt for various levels of Assessment and Report depending on the complexity of the project, and it may involve site visits.
Internal Reductions: Once the Carbon Assessment is complete, we provide clients with a Report containing key recommendations for reducing CO2 emissions. Depending on those recommendations, we'll either work with you ourselves or recommend an appropriate expert from our partner network.
External Reductions (offsets): We source carbon offsets from around the world and to certification levels determined by our clients. It is possible to reduce a proportion of emissions (to meet a particular target, for example), but CarbonNeutral can be applied only when emissions are reduced to net zero. More information about offset projects
Communication: CarbonNeutral clients, activities and services are awarded the most appropriate certification mark which they are licensed to apply across their corporate collatoral. Most clients want to use CarbonNeutral as a key element of their internal and external communications. If help is needed, we are able to take on project work and/or work with in-house and agency teams to help you make the most of the branding for commercial and environmental benefit. Our case studies will give you a sense of what we can do in this area.
