Solar Lighting Systems, India

| This project won SELCO an Asden Award for Sustainable Energy. The organisation designs and sells solar lighting systems in rural India. The systems replace kerosene lamps and the project aims to reduce emissions by 34,500 tCO2 between 2002-2012. |

Many homes in rural India depend on kerosese lamps for lighting because they do not have access to grid electricity or the supply is unreliable. Not only do the lamps produce CO2 but the fumes are a significant health problem and a serious fire hazard.
SELCO designs and sells solar systems, which include a small solar photovoltaic panel, a battery and energy efficient lights. The organisation installs the systems and provides after-sales servicing to ensure the systems continue to deliver benefit. Central to the approach is the partnership with micro-finance organisations, which allows SELCO's customer to pay for the system on terms they can afford.
Acces to clean, good-quality light also provides increased opportunities for income generation through basket making, silk weaving and tailoring. School children also have light by which they can study.
SELCO has adopted an innovative approach and is dispelling the myth that lower income groups cannot afford sustainable tecyhnologies. Sale of carbon credits from the project is further helping to subsidise the cost to the customer, bringing clear benefits to the environment, society and the economy.
