Research Survey 2008

Consumers and employees reward green companies

How is 'going green' really affecting the way we live our lives? Does it impact the products we buy and the companies we work for? How can new technologies help us? And what is the best way to go about making a positive impact within our workplaces?

To answer these questions, TANDBERG teamed up with research firm Ipsos MORI to survey people's attitudes in 15 countries. This survey is one of the largest global research projects into consumer attitudes toward climate change and its impact on corporate brands. Download the survey now.

In 2006, TCNC undertook and published the first comprehensive analysis of the environmental policies of the FTSE 350.  Key findings were as follows:

  • Almost 80% of the FTSE 100 considers climate change to be a business issue, and 35% report meaningful action to incorporate emissions reduction into its core business strategy
  • Only 40% of  FTSE 250 companies even publicly acknowledge climate change as a business issue
  • Just 6% of FTSE 250 companies reports emissions targets, compared to 38% of FTSE 100 companies
  • The average emission reduction target for the FTSE 350 is just 2.4% and 60% of target setters claim to be meeting their emission reduction goals. However, according to the publicly available information reviewed in this analysis, among FTSE 350 companies that report absolute CO2 emissions, there was an overall increase of 3% or 17.6 million tonnes in the last reporting period.
  • Less than one fifth of the FTSE 350 report purchasing any renewable energy. The UK Government has committed that 10% of UK electricity is generated from renewable sources by 2010.

Climate Change - Poll of FTSE350 Directors (Populus 2005)

Key findings:
  • tackling carbon emissions and climate change is seen as a greater priority for companies and government than terrorism or competition from the developing world
  • Overwhelmingly (92%) going beyond their legal obligations on the environment and being perceived as a leader in the field was seen to as likely to be good for business but the plans to realise these ambitions do not appear to be in place amongst the world’s leading companies.
  • Almost two thirds of the Directors in the sample (61%) either said their companies didn’t have a CO2 target or didn’t know if they did
  • Staff benefits like car allowances and bonus company are said to take more of a priority in the overall business than managing CO2 emissions – which scored only just above ‘gym membership’ in the survey
  • 75% of Directors say that businesses will only take carbon emissions seriously if forced to do so by taxes or regulation
  • 73% thought that action to reduce carbon emissions significantly would not damage the economy
  • Nearly a quarter of businesses have a focus on low or no carbon technologies and processes, suggesting businesses are planning for a low carbon future
  • 77% of directors rated the importance their customers placed on their company’s environmental record at 5 out of 10 or above
  • Over 75% said their companies use teleconferenceing instead of travelling to meetings, 19% have offset schemes and 20% claim to measure carbon emissions from travel
Worryingly, most directors interviewed said they didn’t expect emissions to fall as their company grew, suggesting the UK is not on track to meet the Kyoto targets.
